Dyno Troubleshooting
When it comes to everyday motorcycle performance measurement, problem diagnosis and precision tuning, the Dynojet 250ix Inertia Dynamometer offers fast, accurate and repeatable solutions. Our technicians save time by simply running your motorcycle on the dyno and analyzing the data. Dynojet Dynamometers are used to train Harley-Davidson Factory Technicians and also students of MMI. Troubleshooting ignition vs. air-fuel problems, or rich vs. lean conditions, becomes more visible and allows us to dial your motorcycle in to almost 100%. In addition, it also allows us to diagnose mechanical issues that may not be noticeable without tearing into a powertrain component.
Dyno Performance
Our inertia dynamometer measures performance while your motorcycle is accelerating a heavy rotating mass and displays complete HP, Torque, and Air Fuel Ratio curves from a single run. This simulation of real riding conditions permits actual dynamic fuelflow testing, which enables you to study the engine's ability to accelerate the bike's load across the engine power band. This analysis leads to changes which make more power and allow better gas mileage.
Standard for the Industry
The Dynojet Inertia type dynamometer is the standard for performance measurement and engine tuning in the motorcycle industry and as stated above, is used by Harley-Davidson Factory Trainers. Its ease of use and powerful software attracted customers from around the world. The 250ix Inertia Dynojet Dynamometer provides Wilkins HD Technicians with instrumentation and facts instead of seat-of-the-pants guesswork that you may get elsewhere. The 250IX uses Wide Band Technology, unlike most places without a Dynamometer that tune using Narrow Band Technology. Wilkins HD uses Wide Band Technology, which provides you with an exact Air Fuel Ratio of both cylinders. Other dealers without a Dynamometer use Narrow Band Technology which basically provides an indication of rich or lean and are essentially on or off, leaving very little adjustment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
QUESTION: I had my a dealer install a TTS Mastertune or a Super Tuner on my bike and they rode it around. They said it was "dialed in," why would I want to have it Dyno Tuned?
ANSWER: Well, first of all, the recording function on the TTS or Harley-Davidson Super Tuner only records data and relays it to the technician. It doesn't "tune" your bike. The technician still needs to interpret the data and make changes. Secondly, while riding your bike in recording mode does accumulate suggestions, they are usually lean suggestions. Depending on your scenario, your bike may bog down in that area or it may run so lean it is causing damage. Lastly, and most importantly, with a Dyno, you can actually put the motorcycle into each and every cell on a map in a controlled situation. You cannot do this by riding a motorcycle on the street recording data. It is absolutely impossible. Using a Dyno is the least aggressive way to collect data and actually "dial" your motorcycle in.
QUESTION: The place I was at told me I should just do a download and everything will be fine with the configuration I selected. Why spend the extra money to have a Tuner installed and have it Dyno Tuned?
ANSWER: There are certainly a great deal of cases where you can have a download installed on your motorcycle and the motorcycle will run excellent. The downloads were created for Harley-Davidson configurations. Now, sometimes they will work for Non-Harley-Davidson configurations, sometimes they will not. There is a chance you will have stumbles, coughs, hard starts, and deceleration pops. There is also a chance that your bike could be running dangerously lean. At Wilkins HD, we want your motorcycle to run perfect. While we cannot guarantee a perfect running motorcycle, having it Dyno Tuned ensures it is running in a safe area and operating at its peak performance. It also ensures that we are getting the maximum fuel mileage for the maximum amount of power.
QUESTION: What is a Map? I always hear people talk of the Map in my bike.
ANSWER: If you have ever seen an Excel Spreadsheet, it is similar to that. All the little boxes contain values. There are values for the Front and Rear Cylinders. The motorcycle runs off values based on the throttle position (how far you twist the grip), manifold pressure (the pressure inside the engine) and RPM readings to determine how long to open the fuel injectors (pulse width). The collection of these tables and the corresponding ignition tables are referred to as maps.
Why spend your hard earned money having a dealer without a Dynamometer "try and tune" your investment?
DAN L FROM MAINE ON HIS FOUR WHEELER BEING DYNO TUNED
"After searching the internet for somebody in New England with a Dynojet dynamometer (250 ix) to optimize my Honda ATV (with a Dynojet Power Commander V), I found Wilkins Harley-Davidson. I contacted them to inquire about the possibility of tuning an ATV. I corresponded extensively with John Lyon via both email and phone. He thoroughly answered all my questions so I was confident that after driving 300 miles each way (four times) I would be satisfied with the work performed. When I arrived at Wilkins H-D, everyone was very friendly and helpful. I did get a few funny looks from other customers as I cruised around the parking lot on an ATV :-) Ha ha. John showed me around the service area and introduced me to technicians. The dyno facility is very impressive and I knew that I was leaving my machine in knowledgeable, competent hands. During the week that my machine was at Wilkins, I received frequent progress updates on how the tuning was going, performance data, and a few "action shots" of the tuning in-progress. When I returned to pick up my Honda Rancher, I was provided printouts of the tuning performance data. They even washed it for me, prior to my arrival! The work performed was very impressive and after taking it for a ride, I noticed an obvious increase in performance - not only in power output, but also engine response (much quicker) and fuel economy. Overall, I am very happy with my experience at Wilkins Harley-Davidson and wouldn't change a thing if I could, other than the drive."
