Riding a Motorcycle for the First Time. What's the Point?

Some people start at a young age. They have a family steeped in the culture, or their soul screams for that "two-wheeled" feeling—they know that riding a motorcycle is in their DNA. Other people come around to the idea later in life. Maybe it was a lack of opportunity, a touch of fear-based hesitation, or "life" just getting in the way, but whatever the case, sooner or later, they catch wind of the idea that owning a motorcycle is on their horizon.

But why? What's the point? Aren't motorcycles just frivolous money-sucking machines?

Far from it!

Motorcycles have a spirit-pulling magnetism that some people cannot deny. A call to action. A demand for something beyond everyday life. And, for the people who feel the call, nothing other than riding will suffice.

Undoubtedly, riding a motorcycle has a dichotomy that is hard to explain. Yes, for some, it's all about the power—the thrill! But for many, it's more than that. It's a connection to something bigger. There's freedom, but there's also an unwavering responsibility. There's solitude, but there's also a community.

The art of riding a motorcycle is as much, if not more, about discipline than it is a pleasure. Though that may sound off-putting for some, there's no more incredible feeling than enjoying the dynamic balance of focusing your mind while freeing your soul.

And if that's not enough, riding tests you. And, through those tests, you become a more robust, capable, and prepared person able to handle other aspects of your life with greater ease.

You might think I'm overselling the effects of riding a motorcycle, but it's likely that you aren't yet a rider if that's the case. On the other hand, if you're reading this article, there's a good chance that riding is in your future (or you're already a rider, and you came here to oppose the premise in this article's title).

Riding isn't for everybody, and that's okay, but give it a chance if you're on the fence. And, if you're willing to give it a chance, there's no better way to get started than to Start With the Riding Academy Experience.

The team at Wilkins Harley-Davidson is well-positioned to bring new riders into the sport. With some of the best educators in the field and a rider-to-rider experience that is top of the class, you would be hard-pressed to find a better opportunity to start riding.
