Top 5 Wilkins H-D® Winterization Tips

  1. Battery tend. If you purchased a Harley-Davidson® from Wilkins H-D®, you have a battery tender pigtail on your motorcycle. If you need one, swing down and we can sell you one. For less than a cent a day, you can keep your battery up to the proper voltage all winter. Battery tenders only bring the battery to the proper volts and then essentially turn off. They are a fantastic investment. If you need a battery tender, see us! We have them in stock. If you store your Harley-Davidson® with Wilkins Harley-Davidson®, we battery tend it for you.
  2. No Starting. Don't start your Harley® and let it run this winter. Contrary to popular belief, if you start your Harley® and push it outside to let it run in the winter, it does not charge the battery properly. Moreover, it creates heat which then turns to moisture when it gets chilly again. Just hook up the battery tender and leave it alone. Avoid the temptation. It is happy just sitting there quietly! Now, if you are itching to hear your Harley®, that's a different story. Enjoy!
  3. Fuel Additive/Stabilizer. While it is not entirely mandatory, if you are going to have your Harley® in cold storage, a little fuel additive is a good thing. We have some in stock for your needs. A cap full is enough and one bottle of fuel additive will take car of your needs for a year or two.
  4. Change the fluids before putting it up. Yes, believe it or not, you should remove all the fluids and get fresh fluids into your Harley-Davidson® to remove all the moisture from the fluids. We can do this for you or provide you with the necessary knowledge and items to change the fluids.
  5. Clean and Lubricate. Give your Harley-Davidson® a bath. If you are putting it up, get the salts and road debris off the paint, chrome, and aluminum. It will help the surfaces stay beautiful for years to come. Lubricate your cables and other items that typically need lubrication. We do not recommend WD-40. If you store your Harley-Davidson® with us, we will do this for you.
